Paulus, Friedrich

Paulus, Friedrich (frē'drikh pou'loos) [key], 18901957, German field marshal. He commanded the army at the siege of Stalingrad and was raised to marshal's rank several hours before his surrender (Jan., 1943) to the Russians. In captivity he joined the Russian-sponsored National Committee for a Free Germany and appealed to the Germans to surrender. Released in 1953, he lived in East Germany until his death.
