EncyclopediaNorfolk, John Howard (nôr'fuk) [key], 1st duke ofNorfolk, John Howard (nôr'fuk) [key], 1st duke of, 1430?–1485, English nobleman. The grandson of Thomas Mowbray, 1st duke of Norfolk, he held considerable estates in Norfolk. A faithful adherent of the house of York in the Wars of the Roses, he was made sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk by Edward IV and entrusted with diplomatic missions. He later supported Richard III, who in 1483 made him the 1st duke of Norfolk of the Howard family (the Mowbray line having died out in 1476) and earl marshal of England.
