Muti, Riccardo

Muti, Riccardo (rēk-kär'dō mOO'tē) [key], 1941–, Italian conductor. Principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale (1969–81) in Florence and of the Philharmonia Orchestra (1973–82) in London, he became (1977) principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and succeeded (1980) Eugene Ormandy as its musical director, a position he held until 1992. He served as music director of La Scala in Milan from 1986 until 2005. In 2008 the Chicago Symphony announced that he would become its music director in 2010.
