Mary of England

Mary of England (Mary Tudor), 14961533, queen consort of Louis XII of France, daughter of Henry VII of England and sister of Henry VIII. She was betrothed in 1507 to the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, but the contract was broken, and in Oct., 1514, she was married to Louis XII of France, then a man of 52 and in poor health. Soon after Louis's death (Jan. 1, 1515), Mary secretly married the man of her choice, Charles Brandon, duke of Suffolk. With great reluctance Henry VIII pardoned the marriage. Mary was the grandmother of Lady Jane Grey.
