Martínez de Campos, Arsenio

Martínez de Campos, Arsenio (ärsā'nyō märtē'neth dā käm'pōs) [key], 18311900, Spanish general. He served in Morocco (1859–60), in Mexico (1861–63), and in Cuba (1869–72). He played a leading role in the proclamation (1874) of Alfonso XII as king and helped bring the Carlist Wars to an end (1876). In 1877 he was sent to Cuba, where he ended the Ten Years War. In 1879 he was briefly premier of Spain and later war minister. In 1895 he was sent to put down the insurgents in the Cuban revolution, but his lenient attitude caused his replacement by Weyler. He later was president of the Spanish senate.
