Makart, Hans

Makart, Hans (häns mä'kärt) [key], 184084, Austrian history painter, studied with Karl von Piloty. His early success was phenomenal. The emperor of Austria provided him with a studio, and his short life was crowded with official honors and triumphs. In his large history paintings he strove to emulate Titian and Veronese in the use of lush color. Characteristic of his glittering costume pieces is Entry of Charles V into Antwerp (1878, Hamburg).
