Louis of Baden

Louis of Baden (bä'dun) [key], 16551707, margrave of Baden (1677–1707), military commander in the service of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1689 he was made chief commander of the imperial army in Hungary, where he scored (1691) a resounding victory against the Ottomans at Slankamen. Shortly afterward he was sent to head the army of the Rhine in the War of the Grand Alliance (1688–97). He later fought in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–14), but gave up his commands after being forced to retreat; he died a few months later.
