Lipmann, Fritz Albert

Lipmann, Fritz Albert, 18991986, American biochemist, b. Germany, grad. Univ. of Berlin (M.D., 1922; Ph.D., 1927). He emigrated to the United States in 1939 and became a citizen in 1944. In 1941 he became research chemist at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and in 1949 professor of biochemistry at Harvard medical school. For his discovery of coenzyme A, a crucial intermediary in carbohydrate oxidation, he was awarded jointly with H. A. Krebs the 1953 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
