Laelius, Caius

Laelius, Caius (kā'us lē'lēus) [key], d. c.160 B.C., Roman general, consul in 190 B.C. He was the intimate friend and companion of Scipio Africanus Major from youth, and he held command under him in numerous campaigns. His son Caius Laelius Sapiens,. b. c.186 B.C., consul in 140 B.C., was famous for his friendship with Scipio Africanus Minor. Cicero named one of his great works Laelius; sive, De amicitia [Laelius; or, on friendship].
