Jaques-Dalcroze, Émile

Jaques-Dalcroze, Émile (āmēl' zhäk-dälkrōz') [key], 1865–1950, Swiss educator and composer, b. Vienna, studied at the Geneva Conservatory, at the Paris Conservatory with Léo Delibes, and in Vienna with Anton Bruckner. From 1892 to 1909 he taught at the Geneva Conservatory, where he developed his system of eurythmics as an aid to his own teaching. After successful demonstrations of his method he established (1910–14) the Jaques-Dalcroze School at Hellerau, near Dresden. In 1915 the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze was opened at Geneva. Jaques-Dalcroze also composed music and wrote several books, including an autobiography (1942).
