Inman, Henry

Inman, Henry, 180146, American portrait, genre, and landscape painter, b. Yorkville, N.Y., studied with John Wesley Jarvis. He was a founder and first vice president of the National Academy of Design. He was highly esteemed as a portrait painter in the United States and in England. Among his distinguished sitters were Martin Van Buren and William C. Macready (Metropolitan Mus.); Wordsworth (Univ. of Pennsylvania); Fitz-Greene Halleck (N.Y. Historical Society); and Fanny Kemble (Brooklyn Mus., N.Y.). His landscapes and genre works include Picnic in the Catskills and Rydal Falls, England (Brooklyn Mus.).
