Heyden, Jan van der

Heyden, Jan van der (yän vän dur hī'dun) [key], 16371712, Dutch architectural and landscape painter. He worked chiefly in Amsterdam. His charming pictures of towns, buildings, and public squares are painted with accuracy and precision. He is represented in many leading European collections. The Metropolitan Museum has two of his paintings. Van der Heyden improved the construction of fire engines and was made head of the Amsterdam fire department.
