Hecker, Friedrich Franz Karl

Hecker, Friedrich Franz Karl (frē'drikh fränts kärl hek'ur) [key], 1811–81, German revolutionary. A lawyer, he was a leader of the radical republicans in the grand duchy of Baden and during the revolutionary agitation of 1847–49 in Germany, he helped organize the demands for democratic parliamentary government. Prior to the meeting of the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848 he led an unsuccessful uprising in Baden, proclaiming a constitutional republic. Forced into exile, he settled permanently in the United States. A Republican, he supported Lincoln and fought in the Civil War.
