Gordon, Adam Lindsay

Gordon, Adam Lindsay, 183370, Australian poet, b. the Azores. In 1853 he went to South Australia, where he joined the mounted police and later became famous as a steeplechase rider and horse owner. His works include Sea Spray and Smoke Drift (1867), Ashtaroth (1867), and the vigorous Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes (1870). Depressed by debts, he committed suicide at 36. His collected poems were published in 1912.
