Enciso, Martín Fernández de

Enciso, Martín Fernández de (märtēn' fernän'dāth dā enthē'sō) [key], fl. 150919, Spanish conquistador and geographer. Commanding the supply ship for the colony planted (1509) near Cartagena by Ojeda, he met the discouraged men who had abandoned the settlement and persuaded them to found a new one in Darién, where he had a troubled history as administrator. His Suma de geografía, an excellent commentary on the flora and fauna he had observed in the New World, appeared in 1519.
