Edgeworth, Richard Lovell

Edgeworth, Richard Lovell, 17441817, Anglo-Irish educational theorist, b. Bath, England, educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Oxford; father of Maria Edgeworth. A member of the literary coterie of Lichfield, he was a close friend of Thomas Day and Erasmus Darwin. Practical Education (written with his daughter) and his other educational essays show the influence of Rousseau. He also did pioneering work in electricity and telegraphy.

See D. Clarke, The Ingenious Mr. Edgeworth (1965).
