Dickson, Leonard Eugene

Dickson, Leonard Eugene, 18741954, American mathematician, b. Independence, Iowa, grad. Univ. of Texas, 1893. He studied in Leipzig and Paris and joined the staff of the Univ. of Chicago in 1900. A leading American algebraist, he wrote on invariants and the theory of finite and infinite groups. His chief work is A History of the Theory of Numbers (3 vol., 1919–23, repr. 1966).
