Deutsch, Gotthard

Deutsch, Gotthard (gôt'härt doich) [key], 1859–1921, Austrian Jewish scholar and historian. He studied at the rabbinical seminary at Breslau, Germany, and at the Univ. of Vienna (Ph.D., 1881) after which he taught at Brünn in Moravia. In 1891 he went to the United States to become professor of the history and philosophy of religion at the Hebrew Union College at Cincinnati. His contributions to Jewish newspapers and journals, in addition to his many books, made him an outstanding leader of the Jewish community. He was an editor of the Jewish Encyclopedia, contributing many articles. His Philosophy of Jewish History (1897) and History of the Jews (1921) are well known.
