Coudert, Frederic René

Coudert, Frederic René (runā' kOOdâr') [key], 1832–1903, American lawyer and public official, b. New York City. He practiced law in New York City and for many years was counsel in the United States for the French, Italian, and Spanish governments. He was (1880) a member of the international conference at Bern for the codification of the law of nations, served (1893–95) as counsel for the United States in the Bering Sea fur-seal arbitration at Paris, and was (1896–98) a member of the Venezuela Boundary Commission.
