Celtes, Conradus Protucius (kōn'rädus prō'tootsēus kel'tus) [key], pseud. of Konrad Pickel (kôn'rät pik'ul) [key], 14591508, German scholar and humanist. He traveled widely, lectured at several universities, became librarian to Maximilian I, and founded various societies dedicated to classical learning. He was made (1487) first German poet laureate. Of his works—didactic, lyric, and dramatic—his odes in the manner of Ovid and Horace are noteworthy. Celtes discovered the works of the nun Hrotswith (Roswitha von Gandersheim).
