Broadbent, John Edward

Broadbent, John Edward, 1936–, Canadian political leader. After studying at the Univ. of Toronto (Ph.D., 1966) and the London School of Economics, he taught political science at York Univ. In 1968 he was elected to the House of Commons as a New Democratic party member. He was elected leader of his party in 1975. A popular and effective leader, he resigned his party position in 1989 and gave up his parliamentary seat the following year. From 1990 to 1996 he was president of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development, a Canadian human-rights organization. Broadbent was elected to parliament again in 2004.
