Branner, Hans Christian

Branner, Hans Christian, 190366, Danish writer. Branner's early novels, often concerned with the irrational fears of childhood, include The Child Playing on the Shore (1937). With The Riding Master (1949; tr. 1951) he turned to more complex Freudian themes, expressed in an increasingly symbolic vein. Later works include the plays Siblings (1952; tr. The Judge, 1955) and Nobody Knows the Night (1955), and a volume of poems, Ariel (1963).

See study by T. L. Markey (1973).
