Blount, James Henderson

Blount, James Henderson (blŭnt) [key], 1837–1903, American public official, b. Jones co., Ga. U.S. Representative from Georgia (1873–93), he was chosen by President Cleveland as a special commissioner to the Hawaiian Islands in 1893. There the creation of an American-fostered provisional government, under Sanford B. Dole, in opposition to Queen Liliuokalani had caused a crisis. After investigation, Blount declared against the provisional government, and in consequence Cleveland withdrew the treaty of annexation concluded with that government. He recalled the American minister and appointed Blount U.S. minister instead.
