Ångström, Anders Jöns

Ångström, Anders Jöns (än'durs yöns ōng'ström) [key], 181474, Swedish physicist. He was educated at the Univ. of Uppsala and in 1839 became a member of its faculty. He is particularly noted for his study of light, especially spectrum analysis. He mapped the solar spectrum, discovered hydrogen in the solar atmosphere, and was the first to examine the spectrum of the aurora borealis. A unit of length used to measure light waves is named for him.
