Soli

Soli (sō'lī) [key], ancient city of Cilicia, SW of Tarsus, in present-day Turkey. It was founded c.700 B.C. by colonists from Rhodes. An important port at the time of Alexander the Great, Soli was destroyed in the 1st cent. B.C. by Tigranes of Armenia. It was rebuilt by Pompey, who called it Pompeiopolis. The word solecism is derived from the corrupt dialect of Greek spoken by the people of Soli.
