Puteoli

Puteoli (pyOOtē'ulī) [key], ancient city of Campania, S Italy, 8 mi (13 km) W of Naples. Founded c.520 B.C. by Samian Greeks from Cumae, it came under Roman control by the end of the 4th cent. B.C. and was made a citizen colony in 194. It became famous as Rome's port of entry for Eastern trade, handling notably mosaics, pottery, and perfumes. The shops were rich, and the city was surrounded by handsome villas.
