Lampsacus

Lampsacus (lămp'sukus) [key], ancient Greek city of NW Asia Minor, on the Hellespont (now Dardanelles) opposite Callipolis (now Gallipoli). It was colonized in the 7th cent. B.C. by Greeks from Phocaea. Artaxerxes I assigned the city to Themistocles. After the battle of Mycale (479 B.C.) the citizens joined with the Athenians, and the city continued to flourish under the Greeks and the Romans. It was the seat of the cult of Priapus.
