Born: 30 April 1954 Birthplace: Waikanae, New Zealand Best known as: The writer and director of The Piano Jane Campion grew up in New Zealand. She studied film and television in Australia, her first short films gaining international attention. In 1989 she made her first feature film, Sweetie; she won an Oscar for the screenplay of her 1993 film The Piano.
