(1844-1898)
WOODMAN, Charles Walhart,
a Representative from Illinois; born in Aalborg, Denmark, March 11,
1844; was educated in the schools of his native country; followed
the sea 1860-1863; arrived in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1863 and
immediately enlisted in the Gulf Squadron of the United States
Navy; moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1865; graduated from the law
department of Chicago University in 1871; was admitted to the
Illinois bar the same year and commenced practice in Chicago;
appointed prosecuting attorney of the lower courts in 1877;
appointed justice of the peace by the judges of Cook County in
1881; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress (March
4, 1895-March 3, 1897); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in
1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress; engaged in the practice of his
profession until his death; died in Elgin, Ill., March 18, 1898;
interment in Rose Hill Cemetery, Chicago, Ill.
