WOOD, Abiel, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Wiscasset, Maine (then a
district of Massachusetts), July 22, 1772; attended the common
schools; engaged in mercantile pursuits; member of the
Massachusetts house of representatives 1807-1811, and again in
1816; elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress (March 4,
1813-March 3, 1815); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1814
to the Fourteenth Congress; delegate to the constitutional
convention of Maine in 1819; State councilor of Maine in 1820 and
1821; resumed mercantile pursuits and also engaged in shipping;
bank commissioner for Maine until his death in Belfast, Waldo
County, Maine, October 26, 1834; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Wiscasset, Lincoln County, Maine.
