South TRIMBLE, Congress, KY (1864-1946)

TRIMBLE South , a Representative from Kentucky; born near Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Ky., April 13, 1864; attended the public schools of Frankfort and Excelsior Institute; engaged in agricultural pursuits near Frankfort, Ky.; member of the Kentucky state house of representatives, 1898–1900, serving as speaker in 1900; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh, Fifty-eighth, and Fifty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1901–March 3, 1907); did not seek renomination in 1906, but was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of Kentucky; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Sixty-second Congress and for the three succeeding Congresses (April 4, 1911–May 19, 1919); retired from public life and operated a plantation near Selma, Ala.; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Seventy-second and for the seven succeeding Congresses, and served until his death on November 23, 1946 (December 7, 1931–November 23, 1946); died on November 23, 1946, in Washington, D.C.; interment in Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort, Ky.
