John Chew THOMAS, Congress, MD (1764-1836)

THOMAS John Chew , a Representative from Maryland; born in Perryville, Cecil County, Md., October 15, 1764; attended private schools; was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1783; moved to ``Fairland,'' in Anne Arundel County, Md., about 1789; studied law; admitted to the bar in Philadelphia, Pa., December 15, 1787, but did not engage in extensive practice; elected as a Federalist to the Sixth Congress (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1801); declined to be a candidate for reelection; moved to Pennsylvania; died near Leiperville, Pa., May 10, 1836; interment in the Friends Cemetery, near Chester, Pa.
