SYKES, George, a
Representative from New Jersey; born near Sykesville, Burlington
County, N.J., September 20, 1802; educated by private teachers;
became a surveyor and conveyancer; elected as a Democrat to the
Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1845); elected to
the Twenty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death
of Samuel G. Wright, and served from November 4, 1845, to March 3,
1847; resumed his former pursuits; member of the council of
properties of West Jersey; member of the State assembly 1877-1879;
died near Columbia, Mansfield Township, Burlington County, N.J.,
February 25, 1880; interment in Upper Springfield Cemetery, near
Wrightstown, N.J.
