SUTHERLAND, George, a Representative and a Senator from Utah; born in Buckinghamshire, England, March 25, 1862; immigrated to the United States in 1863 with his parents, who were Mormon converts, and settled in Springville, Utah County, Utah; received a common-school education; miner; studied law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; admitted to the bar in 1883 and commenced practice in Provo, Utah; unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Provo in 1890; unsuccessful candidate for Territorial representative in Congress in 1892; member, State senate 1897-1901; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1901-March 3, 1903); declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1902; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1904; reelected in 1910 and served from March 4, 1905, to March 3, 1917; unsuccessful candidate for reelection; chairman, Committee on Cuban Relations (Sixty-first Congress), Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds (Sixty-second Congress), Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Justice (Sixty-third and Sixty-fourth Congresses); president of the American Bar Association 1916-1917; appointed by President Warren Harding in September 1922 an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States; entered upon the duties of that office in October 1922 and served until his retirement on January 18, 1938; died in Stockbridge, Mass., July 18, 1942; interment in the Abbey Mausoleum, Arlington, Va.; remains subsequently moved to Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
