STEDMAN, William, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Cambridge, Mass.,
January 21, 1765; was graduated from Harvard University in 1784;
studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1787 and practiced in
Lancaster, Charlestown, and Worcester; appointed justice of the
peace in 1790; town clerk of Lancaster 1795-1800; member of the
State house of representatives in 1802; executive chancellor of
Lancaster, 1803-1807; elected as a Federalist to the Eighth and to
the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1803,
until his resignation July 16, 1810; clerk of Worcester County
Courts 1810-1816; late in life moved to Newburyport, Essex County,
Mass., where he died August 31, 1831; interment in Old Hill Burying
Ground.
