SITGREAVES, Charles, a
Representative from New Jersey; born in Easton, Pa., April 22,
1803; moved with his parents to New Jersey in 1806; pursued
classical studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar in Easton
in 1824 and commenced practice in Phillipsburg, Warren County,
N.J.; member of the State general assembly 1831-1833; major
commandant in the State militia 1828-1838; member of the town
council in 1834 and 1835; served in the State senate 1851-1854;
president of the Belvidere & Delaware Railroad Co.; mayor of
Phillipsburg, N.J., in 1861 and 1862; president of the National
Bank of Phillipsburg 1856-1878; elected as a Democrat to the
Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1869);
was not a candidate for renomination in 1868; engaged in banking
and railroading; died in Phillipsburg, N.J., March 17, 1878;
interment in Seventh Street Cemetery, Easton, Pa.
