SCUDDER, Nathaniel, a
Delegate from New Jersey; born at Monmouth Court House, Monmouth
County, N.J., May 10, 1733; was graduated from Princeton College in
1751; studied medicine and commenced practice in Monmouth County,
N.J.; member of the committee of safety; delegate to the Provincial
Congress of New Jersey in 1774; member of the state general
assembly, serving as speaker in 1776; lieutenant colonel of the New
Jersey Militia in 1776 and colonel in 1781; Member of the
Continental Congress 1778-1779; trustee of Princeton College
1778-1781; was killed October 17, 1781, at Blacks Point, near
Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, N.J., while resisting an invading
party of the British Army; interment in Tennent Church Graveyard,
Tennent, N.J.
