SCHWARTZ, John, a
Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Sunbury, Northumberland
County, Pa., October 27, 1793; received a limited schooling; at the
age of ten years was apprenticed to a merchant in Reading, Pa., and
became a partner at the expiration of his apprenticeship; served in
the War of 1812 as a major; engaged in the manufacture of iron
products; elected as an Anti-Lecompton Democrat to the Thirty-sixth
Congress and served from March 4, 1859, until his death in
Washington, D.C., June 20, 1860; interment in Charles Evans
Cemetery, Reading, Berks County, Pa.
