RAMSEY, William, a
Representative from Pennsylvania; born at Sterretts Gap, Cumberland
County, Pa., September 7, 1779; attended the public schools;
appointed surveyor for Cumberland County in 1803; clerk of the
orphans’ court of Cumberland County; studied law; was
admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Carlisle, Pa.;
elected to the Twentieth Congress; reelected as a Jacksonian to the
Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses and served from March 4,
1827, until his death in Carlisle, Pa., September 29, 1831;
interment in Ashland Cemetery.
