PIERCE, Henry Lillie, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Stoughton, Norfolk
County, Mass., August 23, 1825; pursued classical studies; attended
the State normal school at Bridgewater, Mass.; engaged in
manufacturing; member of the State house of representatives
1860-1862 and in 1866; member of the Boston Board of Aldermen in
1870 and 1871; mayor of Boston in 1873; elected as a Republican to
the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of
William Whiting; reelected to the Forty-fourth Congress and served
from December 1, 1873, to March 3, 1877; declined to be a candidate
for renomination; again mayor of Boston in 1878; died in Boston,
Mass., December 17, 1896; interment in Dorchester Burying Ground,
Dorchester, Mass.
