PEDDIE, Thomas Baldwin, a
Representative from New Jersey; born in Edinburgh, Scotland,
February 11, 1808; attended elementary schools; immigrated to the
United States in 1833 and settled in Newark, N.J.; engaged in the
manufacture of traveling bags and trunks; member of the State house
of assembly in 1864 and 1865; mayor of Newark 1866-1869; served as
president of the Newark Board of Trade in 1873; elected as a
Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3,
1879); declined to be a candidate in 1878 for renomination; resumed
his former manufacturing pursuits; vice president of the Essex
County National Bank and president of the Security Savings Bank of
Newark; died in Newark, N.J., February 16, 1889; interment in Mount
Pleasant Cemetery.
