MOORE, Thomas, a
Representative from South Carolina; born in Spartanburg District,
S.C., in 1759; served in the Revolutionary War, taking part in the
Battle of Cowpens at the age of sixteen; member of South Carolina
house of representatives, 1794-1799; brigadier general in the War
of 1812; engaged in planting; was one of the founders of the first
high school in Spartanburg District; elected as a Republican to the
Seventh and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1801-March
3, 1813); elected to the Fourteenth Congress (March 4, 1815-March
3, 1817); resumed his agricultural pursuits; died near Moores
Station, Spartanburg County, S.C., on July 11, 1822; interment in
Moore’s Burying Ground.
