William Cotter MAYBURY, Congress, MI (1848-1909)

MAYBURY William Cotter , a Representative from Michigan; born in Detroit, Mich., November 20, 1848; attended the public schools; was graduated from the academic department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1870 and from the law department in 1871; was admitted to the bar in the latter year and commenced practice in Detroit; city attorney of Detroit 1876-1880; lecturer on medical jurisprudence in the Michigan College of Medicine at Detroit in 1881 and 1882; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1887); was not a candidate for reelection in 1886; resumed the practice of law in Detroit; mayor of Detroit 1897-1905; unsuccessful candidate for Governor in 1900; died in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich., May 6, 1909; interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
