minority leader, 1979-1982; director of special projects, office of
the New York state senate minority leader, 1980-1982; member, New
York, N.Y., city council, 1982-1992; elected as a Democrat to the
One Hundred Third and to the nine succeeding Congresses (January 3,
1993-present); chair, Joint Economic Committee (One Hundred
Eleventh Congress).
