LADD, Edwin Freemont, a Senator from North Dakota; born in Starks, Somerset County, Maine, December 13, 1859; attended the public schools and Somerset Academy, Athens, Maine, and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1884; chemist of the New York State Experiment Station, Geneva, N.Y., 1884-1890; dean of the school of chemistry and pharmacy and professor of chemistry at the North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo, N.Dak.; chief chemist of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station 1890-1916; editor of the North Dakota Farmer at Lisbon 1899-1904; administrator of the State pure-food laws, for which he actively crusaded 1902-1921; president of the North Dakota Agricultural College 1916-1921; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1920 and served from March 4, 1921, until his death in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md., June 22, 1925; chairman, Committee on Public Roads and Surveys (Sixty-eighth Congress); interment in Glenwood Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
