KING, Cyrus, (half brother
of Rufus King), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in
Scarboro, Maine (then a district of Massachusetts), on September 6,
1772; attended Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., and was graduated
from Columbia College, New York City, in 1794; studied law; served
as private secretary to Rufus King when he was United States
Minister to England in 1796; completed law studies in Biddeford,
Maine; was admitted to the bar in 1797 and commenced practice in
Saco, Maine; served as major general of the Sixth Division,
Massachusetts Militia; one of the founders of Thornton Academy,
Saco, Maine; elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and
Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1817); returned to
Saco, York County, Maine, where he died on April 25, 1817;
interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
