born in Riverside, Riverside County, Calif., May 31, 1948;
graduated from Rubidoux High School, Riverside, Calif., 1966; B.S.,
Western State University, San Diego, Calif., 1968; J.D., Western
State University, San Diego, Calif., 1976; United States Army
Airborne, 1969-1971; lawyer, private practice; elected as a
Republican to the Ninety-seventh and to the thirteen succeeding
Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 2009); was not a candidate
for reelection to the One Hundred Eleventh Congress in 2008; chair,
Committee on Armed Services (One Hundred Eighth and One Hundred
Ninth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for the Republican
presidential nomination in 2008.
