Kuchel, 1960-1966; senior fellow, Brookings Institution, 1966-1969; administrator, American University, Washington, D.C.; president, California State University, Long Beach, 1970-1988; vice chairman, United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1969-1980, commissioner, 1980-1982; member, advisory board, National Institute of Corrections, 1972-1988, chairman, 1984-1987; vice chairman, California Republican League, 1980-1985; member, California Educational Facility Authority; faculty, California State University, Long Beach; unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the One Hundred First Congress in 1988; elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Third and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1993-January 3, 2003); not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002; died on February 17, 2011, in Long Beach, Calif.
