HOLMES, Pehr Gustaf, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Mölnbacka,
Värmland, Sweden, April 9, 1881; in 1886 immigrated to the
United States with his parents, who settled in Worcester, Mass.;
attended the public schools; engaged in manufacturing; also engaged
in the banking and insurance business; member of the common council
of Worcester, Mass., 1908-1911; member of the board of aldermen
1913-1916, serving as president in 1915 and 1916; mayor of
Worcester 1917-1919; member of the Governor’s council,
seventh Massachusetts district 1925-1928; elected as a Republican
to the Seventy-second and to the seven succeeding Congresses (March
4, 1931-January 3, 1947); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in
1946 to the Eightieth Congress; returned to Worcester, Mass., and
his electrotype business; died in Venice, Fla., December 19, 1952;
interment in Old Swedish Cemetery, Worcester, Mass.
