HAMMOND, John, a
Representative from New York; born at Crown Point, Essex County,
N.Y., August 17, 1827; attended the public schools and St. Albans
Academy, St. Albans, Vt.; was graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in Troy, N.Y.; pioneer in California in 1849; volunteered
as a private in the Civil War; promoted to captain of Cavalry and
advanced to brigadier general; a manufacturer of iron for
twenty-five years; president of the Crown Point Iron Co.; elected
as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses
(March 4, 1879-March 3, 1883); was not a candidate for
renomination; retired from business; died at Crown Point, N.Y., May
28, 1889; interment in Forest Dale Cemetery.
